The Tome

MIDNIGHT TIMES | THE TOME | EPIC CAFÉ | WEBHEAD

A MOMENT OF YOUR TIME

Please, wait one minute--

Touch me again.

Before you go,
Before you walk
On out the door--
Why won't you tell me
That we're all alone?
How many others
Have taken you home?

Don't you see?
It's the way--
You hold me close,
I touch your heart...

Perhaps I'm wrong,
And the gleam in your eyes
Is saying, "So long,
Thanks for the night..."

And the touching I did
Was just in my mind.
Was there a point?
Wasn't it right?
Maybe together,
We're just one more lie.

Don't you see?
It's the way that I am.
Perhaps in that dive
There's some other man...

And the bus stop in Texas?
Just another ride--
Or is that work on the side?

Touch me again--

Please tell me I'm wrong--
Just say that you'll stay.

So beautiful. It's so beautiful--
Here. This is the way...

Touch me again--

Love me tonight,
For the rest of my days.
Perhaps it's not real
This love that I feel--
Maybe it's something
We both hoped to steal.
The way that you touch me
Leads me to believe
There's something your hiding--
Hiding from me.
I think it's your heart,
And the way that you feel;
Could our love have been
Something so damn unreal?

Please, touch me again...

(Yesterday, I sent a letter
To a former lover
And asked if time,
The time we spent together,
If it was--special...
No answer has come
From my extra love--
My ex-love.)

I know that doesn't make sense.

While under the covers
She softly hums...

"So tell me..." I said,
As I lay there in thought,
"What are these wars for,
These wars we have fought?"
She looked at me puzzled,
But spoke not a word--
The tears in her eyes...
(There's that song that we heard).

You're great, you understand,
   (she says)
No. Please, put that away.
Don't you see we're just friends?

This is not what I meant--

(I reflect...)

Touch me once more--
And please, try to forgive.

She closes the door
Walks into the night...

The night... the night...
Wasn't it right?
Please won't you tell me,
Couldn't you try,
To tell me our love
Just wasn't so right?
If love it be called,
That one lonesome night.

It was just one night,
She reminded herself...

At least, I am thinking,
That's what she intended.
In fact, it was mentioned
By some guy at the bar
That girls are real nice,
If you have a fast car.

Touch me again--
(echoes my dream).

The lights grow dim
The nights grow dim
The distant memories
The late night reveries
The bars and cars,
And hotel rooms--
Something you are wearing...
As I drift on through the night
I'm trying hard to fight
This overwhelming din
(I think--her name was--Kim).
But does it really matter?

Tomorrow:
She meets some other lover,
And I realize I'm like him.

There's the swirling of a dress--
The awful loneliness--
(I fear that I digress)
And I've decided
There is no sin,
Because, don't you see,
Love has worn so awfully thin.
Here, where, there are so many--
   (lies...)
So many smiles and casual eyes,
And drinks that stretch on for so
   many miles...
Of dark and dusty roads
Old puddles filled with toads;
So sleepy I have grown,
Driving home, all alone...
